Hannah Lobingier provides patient Robert Cooper with information on local clinics. Cooper came to the emergency room with chest pain and complaints of numbness that he had put off for a long time..."Typically, an ER is a Band-Aid on a condition; a car accident or some other trauma. But we're trying to see the whole picture of the patient. It's a real culture change. A lot of patients we see have never been told they have options in their care. A patient who comes in to the ER with a sore throat or ingrown toenail may not know how they can go to a community partner clinic or urgent care setting and save thousands of dollars." - Hannah Lobingier...Hannah Lobingier and other patient guides in the emergency department at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, Ore., are part of a new grant-based program in the Health Share CCO. Many people who come to the emergency room would be more appropriately served in less-expensive settings, and patient guides such as Lobingier act as advocates to help find these patients the appropriate care.
